Lao Beifong

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Relationships: Husband of Poppy, father of Toph, employer of Master Yu

Character History: The Graphic Novel

Episode Appearances: "The Blind Bandit"

Voice Actor: Cam Clarke

While caring very deeply for his daughter, he also held strong to who he believed her to be, rather than the person she tried to communicate that she was. Toph hid her Earthbending prowess from her parents for many years, but he witnessed it firsthand when she saved Aang's life from a group of ruthless Earthbenders. When seeing this, Lao's reaction was to shelter her further, believing she had too much freedom to engage in dangerous activities. This inspired Toph to run away from home, though Lao believed Aang had kidnapped her, and hired Master Yu and Xin Fu to track her down and bring her home.

Poppy Beifong

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Relationships: Wife of Lao, mother of Toph

Episode Appearances: "The Blind Bandit"

Voice Actor: Gabrielle Carteris

Much like her husband, she also believed their daughter was to be treated with kid gloves due to her blindness. Her heart was in the right place, but she often went along with her husband's decisions regarding Toph's treatment, believing his ideas to be what was best.

The Boulder

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Abilities: Earthbending

Job History: Underground circuit Earthbender

Relationships: Employee of Xin Fu

Episode Appearances: "The Blind Bandit"
"The Day of Black Sun, Part 1: The Invasion"
"The Day of Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse"

Voice Actor: Mick Foley

One of the most popular Earthbenders around, The Boulder took great pride in his stage persona, often referring to himself in the third person and making showy gestures and declarations to his opponents before engaging them in combat. This overly telegraphed nature made it easy for Toph to find an opening and defeat him in a simple move. When Xin Fu believed Toph had cheated the circuit, he took up with the cause and helped kidnap Toph and Aang, and was easily defeated by Toph again when he refused to release Aang.

He would later reappear a changed man, doing the right thing by helping the rebels invade the Fire Nation during the eclipse.

The Hippo

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Abilities: Earthbending

Job History: Underground circuit Earthbender

Relationships: Employee of Xin Fu

Episode Appearances: "The Blind Bandit"
"The Day of Black Sun, Part 1: The Invasion"
"The Day of Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse"

Voice Actor: Kevin Michael Richardson

Another popular figure in the Earth Rumble competitions, mainly due to his incredible size. The Big Bad Hippo is rather slow-witted, not using bridging words to express his points and never referring to himself in the first person. But he greatly enjoys showing off his muscle, able to chew on rocks and shift the ground under his feet simply by rocking his weight from side to side. Despite his girth, Toph was able to throw him, The Boulder and Headhunter out of the underground ring quickly and easily.

He's reunited with Toph, much to his delight, when he and The Boulder join the rebel army during the invasion of the Fire Nation.

Fire Nation Man

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Abilities: Earthbending

Job History: Underground circuit Earthbender

Relationships: Employee of Xin Fu

Episode Appearances: "The Blind Bandit"

A loathed persona in the spectacle of Earthbending fighting due to his allegiance to his continent. As opposed to bending solid rock, Fire Nation Man preferred to use simple dirt to create dust storms, which vaguely resembled smoke to suggest a Firebending nature. He was easily defeated by The Boulder and later by Toph.

The Gopher

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Abilities: Earthbending

Job History: Underground circuit Earthbender

Relationships: Employee of Xin Fu

Episode Appearances: "The Blind Bandit"

An Earthbender who wears goggles and typically burrows underground for sneak attacks. He was defeated by The Boulder during the Earth Rumble tournament and later by Toph when they refuse to release Aang.

The Gecko

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Abilities: Earthbending

Job History: Underground circuit Earthbender

Relationships: Employee of Xin Fu

Episode Appearances: "The Blind Bandit"

A strange Earthbender that wears a green mask and crawls around on all fours to attack, using his Earthbending to stick to walls and avoid being thrown from the ring. However, his small frame makes him more vulnerable to attack, and The Boulder was able to beat him by simply striking him in the midsection with a chunk of rock straight from the ground below. After capturing Aang, he engages Toph in combat by dropping from the ceiling, though she predicts where he'll land and hurls him from the ring.

Headhunter

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Abilities: Earthbending

Job History: Underground circuit Earthbender

Relationships: Employee of Xin Fu

Episode Appearances: "The Blind Bandit"

A crazed Earthbender, his face covered in war paint. He likes to attack by leaping wildly through the air, though such tactics announce his intentions and subsequently land him in trouble. Both The Boulder and later Toph made very quick work of him.
