A very proud and very humble man all his life, despite being born an esteemed member of Fire Nation royalty. As a young man, he accomplished many feats, such as slaying the last dragon on Earth, and being the first military commander to breach the outer wall of Ba Sing Se. However, his prestige came to much of an end following the death of his son in the war. Iroh had lost his heart for battle, and withdrew his troops before they'd conquered the Earth Kingdom capital, souring his appeal within the Fire Nation. It was during his mourning period that Ozai enacted a successful plan to seize the throne from his brother, a result Iroh did not challenge.

When Ozai banished his only son from the Fire Nation, Iroh decided to join him, seeing much of his own fallen son in his nephew. While Zuko did everything he could to please his father and regain his honor, Iroh always made sure he reinforced the need for his own self-esteem and above all, to enjoy the gift of life no matter what befalls you. After three long years, Zuko finally found what he sought, the Avatar was alive, which astonished Iroh, seeing the task put before his nephew as nothing more than dangled hope before that point.

After an unsuccessful number of attempts to capture the Avatar, word began spreading around the world that he was alive, and Princess Azula was sent to take up the task, while bringing her brother and uncle home as prisoners. They managed to escape, and disguised themselves as Earth Kingdom residents, where Iroh was quickly acknowledged for his expertise with tea. After serving patrons faithfully at the most popular tea house in Ba Sing Se, he was offered to serve the Earth King, and accepted. This was a trick by Azula, who'd successfully overtaken the Earth Kingdom royalty and had Iroh and Zuko imprisoned at last. She offered Zuko the chance to regain his honor and help capture the Avatar, a move Iroh did not advise, but his nephew was too tempted. He intervened to allow Aang and his friends to escape their capture, and is taken back to the Fire Nation as a traitor.

For months, Iroh is imprisoned, where he's looked down on by many of the guards as a pitiful and crazy old man. Zuko continues to visit him, behind the backs of his family, but Iroh refuses to speak to him and often even to look at him. Zuko takes this as a lack of forgiveness for his actions, but it was yet another lesson by his uncle, as he's forced to figure out the man he wants to be, free of anyone else giving him the answer. When he is alone in his cell, Iroh exercised diligently until his body was in the best shape since his youth, and when the eclipse arrives, he uses the lack of available Firebending to forge a single-handed escape.

He'd go on to join the Order of the White Lotus, of which he was one of its most esteemed members, in an effort to retake the city of Ba Sing Se from the Fire Nation. By accomplishing this task, he had finally conquered the Earth Kingdom capital in his life, but for all the right reasons. Once the war had finally come to an end, he spent the rest of his life doing the two things he loved most, serving tea and playing Pai Sho.
