Aang's spiritual advisor for the majority of his journey, Roku is the one who informs him that he must hurry and master all four elements before Sozin's Comet passes, giving the Fire Nation the power they'll need in order to bring the Hundred Year War to an end with their decisive victory. It's later revealed that he feels a personal responsibility for this because of him putting his friendship with former Fire Lord Sozin, whom the comet was named after, ahead of his duties as the Avatar.

He and Sozin were once the best of friends, having grown up together and they even shared the same birthday. On their sixteenth, Roku was informed that he was the Avatar, and had to leave on his journey to master the elements immediately. It was then that Sozin gave him the gift of his Fire Nation prince crowning headpiece, which Roku would continue to wear for the rest of his life.

Through a wondrous adventure that lasted many years, Roku conquered the elements, his spiritual side, and made friends around the world before finally returning home to the Fire Nation. Once there, he married his longtime love, and after the wedding ceremony, Sozin approached him about helping to spread the wealth and prosperity of the Fire Nation around the world. Roku was against this idea, having just learned the joys that could only be achieved by the four nations being kept separate from one another. Sozin began his plans anyway, and once Roku learned of the Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom, the two had a grand falling out that ended in Roku threatening his very life if he kept up those actions.

Now with both men having grown old, a fateful day arrives when Roku's island home is assaulted by a volcanic eruption. Roku uses all of his abilities to rescue the citizens and bring the lava flow to an early end, but the natural disaster is simply too powerful and his body too elderly to dominate it. Sozin arrives to help his friend, but when Roku's life is in danger, Sozin hesitates, realizing that the colonies would finally come to fruition with Roku out of the way. He flew off on his dragon, leaving Roku there to die.
