Guides Directory

The group stumbles onto a weapon and a boat that are undeniably of the Southern Water Tribe, a trail which eventually leads them to Bato, the best friend of Katara and Sokka's father. After suffering an injury in a battle with Firebenders, Bato was left behind to heal and is awaiting a message of where to meet his battalion, which Katara and Sokka jump at if it means they can see their dad. In the meantime, he captivates the kids with tales of their adventures, but Aang begins to feel like a third wheel with all of the bonding.

Zuko's ship is attacked by a giant rodent, and when he spots the damage, he sees a girl and demands to know what's going on. Her name is June, and she's a bounty hunter who's managed to find a stowaway on his ship thanks to her faithful shirshu, Nyla. When she explains Nyla's perfect tracking skills, he hires her to track down the Avatar, his bounty worth far more than the usual she collects.

When the message Bato's been expecting arrives, Aang accepts it on his behalf, but hides it in his clothes to ensure Katara and Sokka stay with him. He's called over to help Sokka in his ice dodging test, a Water Tribe ritual marking manhood. They take Bato's boat out, where Sokka instructs Katara and Aang to help guide the ship around the icy obstacles on the river deftly, thoroughly impressing Bato. He awards the children for their skill, Aang for being trustworthy, which makes him admit to hiding the message from the Water Tribe. Sokka is angry and Katara is crushed, and they both leave with Bato to reunite with their father.

Nyla is able to use the scent from Katara's necklace to follow her path until June, Zuko and Iroh finally meet up with her again. Zuko demands to know where the Avatar is, but when they don't tell, Nyla uses its tongue to paralyze them and uses the message to track Aang's scent the rest of the way. They find Aang waiting for them, where he attacks Zuko while Appa handles Nyla. Aang sees Zuko has Katara's necklace, and withstands a volley of Firebending attacks to recover it, while Sokka, Katara and Bato catch up and help Aang. Sokka spots vats of perfume, and figures out that they can confuse the shirshu's ability to smell them, instructing Katara to Waterbend it all over the creature. This freaks Nyla out, making it attack June and Zuko by mistake and paralyze them before it runs off.

Katara and Sokka apologize to Aang for getting caught up in their family reunion, claiming that Aang is now a part of their family as well and they have to stick together. Aang then hands Katara back her mother's necklace as they continue on their mission.
