Mother of Faces

Nationality: Fire Nation

Abilities: Crafting faces, crafting minds

Relationships: Mother of Koh, owner of the Big Giant Wolf Spirit

Issue Appearances: "The Search - Part Two"
"The Search - Part Three"

A spirit as old as time itself, having created every face that living creatures have ever worn. While benevolent, she also had a streak of kindness, allowing once per season, the chance for any human that ever met her to ask one favor of her within her power.

Though, like many other spirits, her patience ran thin. Avatar Aang brought her to meet an elderly man who'd spent his life trying to restore the face he had burned, but Azula asked for her mother's whereabouts first, which she received. The Mother of Faces then wished to be left alone, but the Avatar and his friends proceeded to keep her, which she responded to by turning all of the creatures in the forest against them.

In the struggle, the old man's mask falls off, and Aang sees that his face has been completely removed. The damage reminds him of Koh the Face Stealer, which gets the Mother of Faces' attention, him being the son she hasn't seen in millennia. Her compassion gets the better of her, and she returns the face he lost. She would then follow the Avatar and restore the face of Zuko's mother as well.

Big Giant Wolf Spirit

Nationality: Fire Nation

Abilities: Fire-eating, animal generation

Relationships: Pet of the Mother of Faces

Issue Appearances: "The Search - Part One"
"The Search - Part Two"
"The Search - Part Three"

This creature of legend is said to act as the herald of the Mother of Faces whenever it appears at a still pool within the Forgetful Valley to drink. Avatar Aang first faced this wolf in Hira'a, when his face began to take on a grotesque expression in response to its presence. While he attempted to befriend the beast, the wolf spirit acted rashly around the young Airbender and his friends, spewing a swarm of moth-wasps from its mouth in a bid to escape.

When Aang encountered it again, it tried to run away with the monk clenched tightly to its fur, as it returned to the side of its master.

General Old Iron

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Abilities: Retractable armor

Relationships: Bodyguard of Lady Tienhai

Issue Appearances: "The Rift - Part Two"
"The Rift - Part Three"

A colossal spirit that served as the guardian of Lady Tienhai in a time long past. He loved her dearly, but despised humanity, as he'd heard rumors that wherever they go, spirits are soon to disappear. Sure enough, when a small tribe had come to live where they stayed, and established a great city on that land, Lady Tienhai died, and General Old Iron held the people of that city responsible.

General Old Iron transformed into a demonic rock creature and attacked them, forcing the citizens to call in the Avatar to protect them. Yangchen did battle with the giant spirit, eventually getting him to talk out his problem, and they decided that humans should learn to show respect for the spirits so they can thrive, ushering in the annual holiday known as Yangchen's Festival to honor them.

But when Satoru's uncle Loban greedily seizes Old Iron's mask for the sake of profit, it enrages and awakens Old Iron's spirit, which commands the Earthen Fire Refinery be destroyed to preserve his land. But when Toph defends her father's refinery, Old Iron sets his sights on her which forces Aang to attack Old Iron with a fatal blow. Old Iron admits defeat, and that the world no longer needs spirits.

Lady Tienhai

Nationality: Earth Kingdom

Abilities: Singing

Relationships: Friend of General Old Iron

Issue Appearances: "The Rift - Part Two"
"The Rift - Part Three"

A friendly spirit who greeted each day with as much positivity as could be imagined. Despite what humans represented to her kind, she came to care greatly for a tribe that found their home on her land, and she helped them to achieve prosperity there, becoming a grand civilization over time. But one fateful day, the king made a mistake that resulted in Lady Tienhai's death.

That mistake was loving her. Tienhai annually disguised herself as a human to interact with the people she'd grown to adore, and the king charmed her so much that she willingly rebuked her spirit form to become fully human, and with that came mortality. Upon her death, the king blamed himself for luring her away from the ability to live forever, but she knew that spirits can never truly die, they can only change form. She showed this to Avatar Aang in her new form as a flock of cranefish.

Flutter-Bat Spirit

Nationality: Fire Nation

Abilities: Flight

Issue Appearances: "The Search - Part Two"

After leading the Avatar to a reflective pool upon their first meeting, a trip into the Spirit World confirmed for Aang that this was actually a spirit that was trying to help him all along. The Airbender rode on its back to see the entire Forgetful Valley, and locate the Big Giant Wolf Spirit he was looking for.
