The transition to becoming the guiding force of the Fire Nation met with even greater adversity than he assumed going into it. Not wanting a repeat of history, he laid out on the table that he wanted Aang to kill him should he ever show signs of becoming like his father, a ruler who cared only about amassing power and imposing his will. With negativity both within him and outside the palace, Zuko began sleeping terribly, having had multiple attempts made on his life since taking the throne. One night, he awoke just before another, by Kori Morishita in defiance of the Harmony Restoration Movement. Once Zuko realized her age, he heard her out and set off for Yu Dao in order to straighten things out.

Once he arrived in the original Fire Nation colony, he saw the rich culture they had developed over time, and realized that driving a wedge between that was wrong. So, without any word to anyone, he suddenly withdrew support of the movement to evict the Fire Nation, stemming the ire of the entire Earth Kingdom.

When Earth King Kuei ordered troops to move into Yu Dao, he commissioned his own armies there to defend them. Aang stood up to him in that moment, where he realized that the decisions he made lived up to the promise he made with his friend, having become every bit the man his father was. When Aang instead separated Yu Dao from both nations, Zuko realized he'd made a proper choice all along, and apologized to Aang for making him figure out the things it would now be upon he and he alone to solve.

This inner turmoil he believed could be quieted by finally discovering whatever became of his mother, something his father was completely unwilling to tell him even while imprisoned. So, Zuko made the fateful decision to enlist the aid of his demented sister Azula to coax the information from Ozai instead. While she did as asked, she got free of his grasp and burned a series of letters their mother had written confirming where she grew up, all except one. This forces Zuko to take her along on his journey, where after a great many threats, most of them caused by Azula herself, he is finally reunited with the mother who was forced to leave him behind. And they now have the time to catch up on everything they've missed.
